About

Republican Party of Grayson County Texas!

Grayson County is a north border county lying just south of the Red River and Lake Texoma. The County seat is Sherman, Texas, but it shares it’s heritage with a host of other conservative cities that all value Liberty, Law, and Personal responsibility.

In December 1845, Texas was annexed into the Union. The first State Legislature organized several new counties, one of which was Grayson County. It was created from a part of Fannin County and authorized on November 17, 1846. Grayson County was named for Peter W. Grayson. By 1880, having survived the tumultuous years of the Civil War and reconstruction, Grayson County reached a pinnacle in Texas economic history by having the largest population of any county in Texas. In 1881, Merchants and Planters Bank, a Sherman Bank, was the largest banking firm in Texas. Later, in 1885, Dunn and Bradstreet listed Sherman as the financial center of Texas.

The Republican Party of Texas was founded in 1854 by a group of Mid-Western abolitionist. Texas was in the middle of the heated slavery controversy with most state leaders being Democrats and supporting the pro-slavery Confederacy. For the first two generations following the Civil War, Texans, who had never lost a battle at home, struggled with forgiving a Republican President who marched in and occupied the Lone Star State. Early support for the Republican Party developed slowly but dramatically. The first Republican state convention in 1867, began with 600 delegates, most of whom were black. The party continued growing on the shoulders of a fiercely independent people, proud of self reliance, and an unmatched work ethic. Early Texans lived, loved, and died entirely by their own efforts without relying on government to fulfill their needs.

Although voters of Grayson County favored Democratic candidates from 1892 through 1976, in 1928 a Republican Presidential candidate took the county, but then the democrats prevailed until after 1980, when Ronald Reagan took the county. The trend to Republican presidential candidates then began, interrupted only by Ross Perot in 1992. Today, every partisan elected official in Grayson County, or representing Grayson county, is a Republican.

Grayson County has 41 precincts with 34 seats filled. We host a Lincoln-Reagan Day Dinner fund raising event and participate in most of the community festivals, rallying in support of our elected officials and for conservative causes.
